us-66-mapOnce upon a time, from the 1920’s to the 1970’s, the only road to reach from America’s Midwest to the Pacific coast was U.S. Highway 66 – the ‘Mother Road’. This 2400 mile road ran from the heart of Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica in California. Nowadays, this famous old road has been replaced by the more modern interstate system. Very little of historic Route 66 still exists, but it remains possible to enter into the spirit of things and make the journey. I found myself in the Chicago area with time on my hands in early October 1997 and decided to make the trip. I wanted to see if it could be done in a two week vacation.

Although the dates on this blog are from 2016, I actually made this trip in October 1997!
