Day two of the road trip was difficult. Even with my new map, tracing the course of the route through Missouri is not easy – you might want to take a friend or partner along as a navigator! This second day, I crossed the state line into Kansas, briefly, then into Oklahoma. The Kansas section is just 13 or so miles but they sure are proud of it… it isn’t just sign-posted but they paint it on the road too!
Oklahoma was, in parts, easy to follow especially as initially the old road still exists as State Route 66. An interesting stop in the state is the J.M. Davis Gun Museum in Claremore, with around 20,000 guns on display as well as other less deadly exhibits. Mr. Davis was certainly a collector. The museum charges no admission fee but they suggest a donation of $3. Another place of interest in Oklahoma is the Old Round Barn in Arcadia. While you are examining that, you may want to grab a coffee and a bite at the Hillbillies Route 66 Cafe across the street – plenty of memorabilia and knowledgeable locals. That about finished the second day off as the sun was getting low and into my eyes (heading west remember). I found another budget motel in Oklahoma City for the night having covered 452 miles in 9 hours on the road.
